5 Breathtaking Waterfalls on the Gold Coast You Must Visit

The Gold Coast is more than just sun, sand, and surf (though it does those things pretty well, we must admit). Venture beyond its famous beaches, and you'll discover a world of natural beauty tucked away in the lush hinterlands.

The waterfalls on the Gold Coast are nothing short of spectacular, offering a serene escape into nature. These gorgeous natural wonders make for the perfect stops on a hinterland day trip, which is one of the best things you can do when holidaying on the sunny GC.

Whether you're an avid hiker, a nature lover, or simply seeking a stunning backdrop for your next Instagram post, the Gold Coast hinterland waterfalls are sure to impress.

In this guide, we'll take you through five of the most breathtaking waterfalls near the Gold Coast that you absolutely must visit—no excuses!

What’s Inside This Blog?

Springbrook National Park Waterfalls

Purling Brook Falls

Our journey begins with one of the best waterfalls on the Gold Coast—Purling Brook Falls. Located in Springbrook National Park, this 106-metre-high waterfall just begs to be photographed—but make sure you don't spend too long behind your phone, because witnessing this fall is seriously awe-inspiring.

The walk to the falls takes you through the ancient Gondwana rainforest, where you'll be surrounded by towering trees, lush ferns, and the sounds of native wildlife.

The trail is a 4-kilometre loop that’s moderate in difficulty, making it accessible for most fitness levels (and perfect for those of us who prefer a gentler stroll over a sweat-inducing hike—anyone with us there?)

As you approach the viewing platform, the sight of the water cascading over the cliff edge into the deep pool below is nothing short of breathtaking.

For those who are a bit more adventurous, the walk continues down to the base of the falls, offering a different perspective and a chance to cool off in the refreshing spray.

Twin Falls

Next up is Twin Falls, another stunning waterfall in Springbrook National Park. As the name suggests, this waterfall features two separate streams of water plunging into a tranquil pool below.

The 4-kilometre Twin Falls Circuit is a relatively easy walk, perfect for families, romantic strolls with your beau, or those simply looking for a more relaxed hike.

The trail takes you through lush rainforest, under rocky overhangs, and behind the waterfalls themselves. The pool at the base of the falls is perfect for a refreshing dip, so be sure to pack your swimmers!

The best time to visit Twin Falls is early in the morning when the light filters through the trees, creating a magical, almost ethereal atmosphere. If fairies exist, we're sure they like to hide out here.

Natural Bridge

Natural Bridge is one of the most iconic waterfalls near the Gold Coast. This waterfall is actually a natural rock formation created by the force of the waterfall over thousands of years.

The result is a beautiful cave-like structure where the water flows through a hole in the rock, forming a waterfall inside the cave. Yes, it really is as amazing as it sounds.

The short walk to Natural Bridge is easy and suitable for all ages, making it a popular choice for families. The trail is particularly beautiful at night when you can spot glow worms lighting up the cave.

Just be reminded that to protect the delicate ecosystem, swimming is not allowed here. Instead, take a moment to soak in the serene beauty of this unique natural wonder.

Springbrook Plateau

While not exactly a waterfall, we couldn't resist adding Springbrook Plateau to our list as it's a must-visit spot when exploring the Gold Coast hinterland waterfalls region.

The plateau offers stunning panoramic views over the Gold Coast and surrounding hinterlands. On a clear day, you can see all the way to the ocean.

The aptly named Best of All Lookout is the highlight, offering one of the most breathtaking views on the Gold Coast. It feels surreal to stand and gaze at a view that's truly one of the most glorious in Australia.

The plateau is also home to numerous walking tracks, some of which lead to secluded waterfalls and swimming holes. It’s the perfect spot to begin or end your waterfall adventure, with plenty of picnic spots to relax and enjoy the scenery.

Tamborine National Park Waterfalls

Curtis Falls

Moving on to Tamborine National Park, Curtis Falls is top of the list. This picturesque waterfall is easily accessible via a short 1.5-kilometre walk through lush rainforest.

The trail is well-maintained and suitable for all ages and fitness levels, making it a great option for a family day out.

At the end of the trail, you’ll find a viewing platform that offers a perfect vantage point to take in the falls. The water cascades down into a cool rock pool, surrounded by greenery and teeming with native wildlife.

While swimming is not permitted at Curtis Falls, the serene beauty of the area makes it well worth a visit.

Cedar Creek Falls

Cedar Creek Falls in Mount Tamborine

Cedar Creek Falls is another highlight of Tamborine National Park. This series of waterfalls and rock pools is the perfect spot for a day of relaxation and exploration.

The falls cascade over smooth rocks into a series of clear pools, perfect for swimming and cooling off on a hot day.

The area is popular for picnics, so pack a lunch and enjoy a day in nature. We recommend visiting in the morning when the area is quieter—and you can (fingers crossed) have the pools to yourself.

Tamborine Mountain

You caught us again—Tamborine Mountain isn't a waterfall (obviously—it’s a mountain, right?), but this iconic destination is a must-visit when exploring the waterfalls near the Gold Coast. It’s so beautiful we dubbed it one of the most Instagrammable locations on the Gold Coast.

The mountain is home to a range of walking tracks, lookouts, and attractions, including the famous Tamborine Rainforest Skywalk. The skywalk takes you through the treetops, offering stunning views over the rainforest and beyond.

The mountain is also home to charming villages, where you can explore local shops, art galleries, and cafés. It’s the perfect place to spend a day or two, combining your waterfall adventure with a taste of the local culture.

Tips for Visiting Gold Coast Waterfalls

Before you set off on your waterfall adventure, here are some tips to ensure you have a safe and enjoyable experience.

Visiting any national park or nature reserve isn't without its regulations for eco protection matters, so it's best to be informed and prepared.

Safety First

When visiting waterfalls, safety is paramount. Always stay on designated paths and follow all signage.

Though stunning, waterfalls can sometimes be dangerous, especially after heavy rain when water levels are higher and rocks can be slippery.

Never attempt to climb the rocks or jump from the top of the falls, as this can be extremely dangerous.

What to Pack

A woman and man with backpacks on a hike

When exploring the Gold Coast hinterland waterfalls, pack the essentials—and we don't mean multiple bags of gourmet picnic goodies (delicious as that sounds).

Instead, as with any longer walking trail or light hike, you'll want to pack light but smart:

  • A good pair of walking shoes is a must, as the trails can be uneven and slippery in places.
  • Don’t forget to bring plenty of water and compact snacks that fill you up and fit into smaller spaces.
  • Sun protection, including a hat, sunscreen, and sunglasses are of course essential—we're in Queensland, after all.
  • If you plan on swimming, pack a towel and a change of clothes.
  • A camera or smartphone is also essential to capture the stunning scenery.

Plan Your Visit

Before you set off, invest a little time in planning to maximise your time and ensure you get to tick off every waterfall from your bucket list.

Check the weather conditions, as some trails may be closed after heavy rain. Also, be sure to check the opening hours of the parks, as they can vary depending on the season.

If you’re planning to visit during the weekend or school holidays, try to arrive early to avoid the crowds.

Best Times of Year to Visit and Best Times of Day to Go

The best time to visit the waterfalls on the Gold Coast is during the wetter months of summer and early autumn, from December to March.

During this time, the waterfalls are at their most spectacular, with higher water flow and lush, green surroundings.

As for the best time of day to visit, early morning is ideal. The light is softer, making for better photos, and the trails are usually quieter, allowing you to enjoy the serenity of the surroundings.

Visiting in the morning also means you’ll avoid the heat of the day, making your hike more comfortable.
